WHAT ARE BASEMENTS?

We will help you get to the base of the problem

Many houses have basements, cellars and vaults which were never designed for modern living.  As a result, they can suffer from rising damp and penetrating damp – and sometimes, even be prone to flooding, meaning that they are not being used to their full potential.

Basement tanking is often a cost-effective and simple way of achieving extra living or storage space in your basement area and, here at Crownstone, our specialist team of surveyors and technicians have a variety of innovative waterproofing solutions at hand to help.

Cementitious Systems

Cementitious systems rely on the use of internally applied waterproof cements to stop moisture from entering the building from the outside.  These are ideal where there is not free-flowing water, or where the area to be waterproofed is fairly small or the damp problem is isolated.

Cavity Drain Membranes

Cavity drain membranes are a studded material, fixed to the inside of a basement, which help to prevent water from entering the internal finishes of the basement by channelling it into a drainage system, from where it is normally pumped out.  Once the membrane is installed, walls may be plaster boarded and floors screened to prepare for final decorative finishes.

Cavity drain systems are ideal in that they do not require costly and, often messy, hack off of existing plaster systems.  Redecoration can also be performed speedily as there is no need for the system to dry or cure.

External Systems

Exterior basement waterproofing is most common where basements are under construction, however, there are times when it may need to be installed to preserve and existing property.

Installing external waterproofing systems isn’t popular, largely due to the extensive excavation and drainage works which are often required.  Here at Crownstone our Certified Surveyors in Structural Waterproofing are experts in all elements of waterproofing and drainage design and installation.  If you are unsure whether you require an external waterproofing system, call us for a free consultation today on 0208 226 5654 or contact us using the online form at the bottom of this page.

Injection Systems

Sometimes damage to a basement may be localised, often appearing in the form of cracking.  When cracks appear in concrete, especially at basement or underground level, they can cause serious and detrimental leaks.  Cracks in your basements are weak points, where water penetrating from the ground may affect the lifespan and usability if your space.

Reasons for cracking may include increased loads, for example, an extension on the ground floor above) or changes in the ground due to environmental factors above, for example, cutting down a large tree or having an exceptionally dry summer.

If you discover a crack in your basement, it’s important not to panic.  Crownstone’s team of Certified Surveyors in Structural Waterproofing are experts in the use and application of a wide range of injection systems, which can be used in a variety of scenarios, from new-builds to existing structures.  Whatever your problem, our team will have a versatile, adaptable an innovative solution to make sure that your basement stays dry.
